Rocky Mountain National Park | October 2009

I returned to Rocky Mountain National Park on Friday, October 9th 2009. The weather was pretty nice, so I decided to take the longer route by traveling through Big Thompson Canyon. The last time I drove through it, I spotted some Big Horned Sheep; I was fortunate enough to see some again during Friday's trip. When I got to the park, the temperature dipped. It was sunny and warm in Denver, but in the park, it was snowy and cold.

Every year, the city of Estes Park hosts an event called "Elk Fest". It's a celebration of the area's elk population. On the final day of "Elk Fest", I was sent to Estes Park to report on a large herd of Elk near the city's 18-hole golf course. You can watch the story by clicking here.

I drove through a nasty rain storm in Elbridge the other day. I was halfway between Auburn and Syracuse. Once the storm passed, a rainbow popped up in the sky. It was a pretty neat sight.

I drove through the town of Lincoln in Madison County, Monday. It has one of the most unique wind farms in New York. The wind turbines are scattered along a wavy hill, near residential homes and farm land.

Later on that day, we decided to take a trip to St. Bernard Parish, LA. We took the ferry from Belle Chasse, and crossed the Mississippi River. Within ten minutes we saw homes and apartment buildings that looked like they were hit by the hurricane the day before.

We found a newspaper inside one apartment, lying on a table. It was dated August 27, 2005 - one day before Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. The storm had already plowed through Florida and killed six people.

Monday marked our first official day in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. As the sun rose over the Mississippi River, volunteers started to gear up for a day of hard work. Once they finished breakfast, they piled into the vans parked outside the First Christ Church. They drove a mile up the road to a work site. For the next three weeks, they would build a home from the ground up.

The sunrise over the Tennessee hills painted a beautiful picture. I knew it was going to be a good day. It took us a while to get through the volunteer state (Tennessee). A few hours later, we reached Alabama. For the most part, the state was dull. Although, we did pass by a few Piggly Wiggly tractor trailers.
By the time we reached Birmingham, I felt energized. I had passed through the city once before. Despite its awkward size, I still marveled over it. There's something about southern cities that I liked.
The rest of the drive was quiet - until we reached Mississippi. I absolutely love Mississippi.
Once we entered the state, we pulled into a welcome center. It was by far the nicest welcome center I've ever visited. The woman behind the desk, inside the building, offered us free coffee and soda. She asked us where we were from. "Syracuse, New York," I said. She asked me if I would sign that down in the welcome center's log book.
We stayed there for about a half hour. The temperature hovered around the mid 50's. It was nice. Far different from the weather back home.
After we left the welcome center, we headed down the Dixie Highway until we reached New Orleans. From the moment we entered the city, we could tell it was still in shambles. Repair work was still being done on the bridge that connected Mississippi and Louisiana.
Albeit noticeable, the city's damage was overshadowed by its beauty. This was noticeable as we circled across I-10.
Belle Chasse, the area where we were headed, was only about 20 minutes outside the city of New Orleans. It took us a while to find the church we were staying at.
It was a small church, but it had character. We went to bed around ten o'clock that night. I rolled up in my sleeping bag, on top of a cot - and drifted into dreamland.

My Louisiana Adventure - Day 1

Beep. Beep. Beep. A piercing noise shattered the silence in my room. My eyes flickered for a bit. It was the alarm on my cell phone. I opened it up and looked at the time. It was 4:55 am. I barely got two hours of sleep the night before.

I had no time to waste. Before I knew it, I was out of the shower, dressed and ready to go. About an hour later, a van rolled into my driveway. A short man, in his mid-50's opened the door and said, "Good Morning!". His name was George Lorifice. He was a retired worker from Manlius. He was our driver. Before we hit the road, we picked up another passenger in Tully. Her name was Marianne. She too, was in her 50's. Both she and George volunteered with the local chapter of habitat for humanity. "So, this is it?", Marianne said. "Yep, the four of us," George responded.
The fourth passenger was my housemate Phil. He's a web-producer at NewsChannel 9. We brought a bunch of gear with us to put together a few sweep's pieces for February. Our van was pretty comfy. There was plenty of room. Last year, when I traveled with another group of volunteers to Gulfport, MS - the van was packed. There were at least seven people in it!I tried napping for a bit, but it was useless. I couldn't sleep. I was too excited. I reached for my backpack and pulled out my i-pod and a new book I had bought the day before. It's called, Reality Show. All I needed was a good book and a play list of country songs and I was set.
Our first stop was in West Virginia. The four of us were hungry. Our stomachs made that apparent, with constant rumbling. "There's an exit up ahead," George said. We saw a sign for a Wendy's.After a brief search, we couldn't find it - and settled for Burger King, instead. A half-hour later, we were on the road.
We made a few more stops once we made our way to Virginia. That's where this picture was taken.
I took a deep breathe, and stretched; my legs were soar. In the distance, I saw a small stretch of mountains. I stared for a few minutes.
I love driving through different states. There's nothing quite like it. Especially when the sun starts to set.

Our group decided to stay overnight in Bristol, VA. The drive to Belle Chasse, LA was too long to drive in one day. We spent the night in a church. It was rather nice. The next morning, we woke up and hit the road again. By six o'clock that evening, we would be in Belle Chasse, LA.

Truxton is situated in the north east corner of Cortland County. I passed through the town in mid-January (2007). On this day, a beautiful sunset created a warm-golden glow.

I grew up about ten minutes north of Lake Delta, in the tiny town of North Western. I can't tell you how many times I've passed by the Delta Dam. On a cold day in January (2008), I decided to stop and take some pictures.

Return to New Orleans

I'm returning to New Orleans on January 12, to help rebuild two homes in the 9th Ward. They were destroyed by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. More than two years later, they're still a mess. In a sense, it's almost unbelievable.

The church group I'm traveling with is based out of Liverpool, NY. I volunteered with them last February, in Gulfport MS.

The city of Syracuse's Christmas Tree was brought to life Friday evening.

Up until now, it's been sitting in Clinton Square with no lights on. I took some pictures of it, after the lighting. They didn't come out too well, because it was a little snowy. My apologies.

I really enjoy photography. It's one of my favorite hobbies. I started shooting when I was 20 years old. Eventually I got pretty darn' good at it. In 2006, the Associated Press named me 'Photographer of the Year' (Small Market) in New York State.

In the last few months, I've been teaching myself how to shoot "still" photos. Most of the time I use video cameras at work, so I'm used to motion. Back in March I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07 digital camera.

The Great Out Doors!

More than anything, I really enjoy the outdoors. As far back as I can remember, I've always been fascinated with nature.

I was fortunate enough to grow up 25 minutes outside the Adirondacks. My family and I would spend most of our weekends in the Old Forge/Big Moose area. Oddly enough, I never saw any moose...hmmm...

I've climbed a number of mountains in the Adirondacks. Although, I still have yet to accomplish Mount Marcy. Mount Marcy, as some of you know, is the largest mountain in New York State. It's more than 5,300 feet - Which is pretty big compared to some mountains in the North East.

My friends and I are thinking about driving to Kingston this weekend. If we don't end up going to Canada, I'm going to suggest we climb Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain is a decent-sized hike. My mom climbed it in about 2 hours. Which means I'll finish it in 3.
